RyanDSCN2201-1 Miller and Tim Norton participated in a luncheon held at Newport’s Fort Adams in an attempt to bring the next America’s Cup back to Newport.  The oldest trophy in international sport nicknamed the “Auld Mug” is on its US victory tour and has stopped in Newport for a public viewing, harbor parade, and celebration.  This is Newport’s chance to show the BMW Oracle Racing Team that we are fully capable to host the next of the cup races.     

 

 

 

Rhode Island welcomes the BMW ORACLE Racing Team and the America’s Cup Trophy to Newport on July 1st

For the second time since 1983, when the America’s Cup was lifted up by the Australia II team, the America’s Cup Trophy will be back in Rhode Island. After a public viewing downtown followed by a Harbor Parade of Sail from Downtown Newport landing at Fort Adams State Park, Sail Newport and the RI AC 34 Committee will host a luncheon at Fort Adams State Park.  13-exhibit-2The Northeast Maritime Exhibition was held at Mystic Seaport in Mystic, CT from May 14-16. Visitors enjoyed boarding several new and brokerage boats on the Mystic River, including Catalinas, Hunters, Hanses, an Island Packet, a Lagoon, American Tug, Nord Stars, and a Fathom 40. Boats on land were the Laser, 420, Sunfish and Optimist from LaserPerformance, a Wave catamaran, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards from Hobie, an O’Pen dinghy, Techno 293 sailboard and stand-up paddleboards from BIC, and a beautiful new Dyer Dhow. The crew of the 125’ Spirit of Massachusetts gave tours, described their Ocean Classroom voyages, and hosted a post-show cocktail party on Saturday.

An array of nautical vendors were on site, offering everything from eco-friendly bottom paint to jewelry and foul weather gear. Clay Burkhalter hosted a special screening of MADSTREAK, a new documentary about his solo Mini Transat Race in 2007, and answered questions.

Attendees also enjoyed the museum at Mystic Seaport, experiencing American maritime history by climbing aboard historic tall ships, strolling through the re-created 19th Century village and watching a working preservation shipyard in action (including the restoration of the Charles W. Morgan, the world’s last surviving wooden whaleship. “This is hands-down the best place you could possibly have a boat show,” commented Ralph Ernest McEldowney IV from Fairfield, CT. “I am able to enjoy checking out the mix of boats and gear, and also bring my daughter along for a fun history lesson.
